Dancing With the Stars Returns in March

Dancing With the Stars returns to the small screen in mid-March, and moves nights from Tuesday/Wednesday to Monday/Tuesday. Why the move? Well, with American Idol coming on for its umpteenth season, Dancing decided to split its schedule to avoid the competition. Stephen McPherson, president of ABC Entertainment, said of the move, “The great thing about this air schedule is that fans won’t have to choose between the two reality hits this spring.” Too true. Fans of both shows, however will have their dance card (sorry, couldn’t resist) filled with watching both hit talent competitions. Who will be dancing in this latest installment? Sorry, folks. The official word isn’t expected until closer to the March 19th premiere date. Stay tuned—Good Morning America will make the announcement as we get closer to that date. The premiere will be two hours, with another two-hour installment on March 26th. The results show will be on Tuesday, March 27th. The shows will go to 90 minutes beginning on April 2nd.

Tiffani Thiessen Joins Cast of What About Brian
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, ABC, Dancing With The Stars, Ratings,
With the recent news that Stacy Keibler, of Dancing With the Stars, is joining What About Brian, and now Tiffani Thiessen, it seems that the show is desperately scrambling to build viewer interest. How best to do that? Hiring on a couple of hot women certainly can’t hurt. Of course, maintaining some more interesting storylines would be a good start too. I don’t know what happened to this show—this mid-season replacement was so great last year, then just seemed to go nowhere this season.
Thiessen, of Saved by the Bell and Beverly Hills 90210 fame, will play Natasha Dylan, an intern of Dave’s who is now his boss at KC Gaming. Apparently, she’ll be sexy (naturally) and manipulative, and will be playing mind games with both Brian and Adam. Stacy Keibler will play an actress and model named Stephanie, who moves in downstairs from Brian (Barry Watson). She’ll be on hand to provide additional sexiness, and to create tension between Brian and his girlfriend. My question is, whatever happened to Marjorie (played by Sarah Lancaster)?

Mario Lopez Next Miss America Host
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Cable, Dancing With The Stars,
Fresh off of his successful turn on Dancing With the Stars, Mario Lopez will next be taking on hosting duties for the Miss America pageant. No stranger to hosting duties, Lopez hosted Pet Star on Animal Planet, a contest looking for the most talented animal. So maybe hosting a beauty pageant won’t be too much of a stretch. I kid! He also hosted the Miss Teen USA pageant in 2003, so he has experience with both beauty queens and pets.
“I’m honored. I think it’s going to be great,” Lopez commented to The Associated Press. Last year, Miss America was hosted by Desperate Housewives James Denton. Lopez doesn’t, however, plan to sing the theme of “There She Is, Miss America” when the pageant airs January 29th from Las Vegas.

Emmitt Smith Wins Dancing with the Stars
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Dancing With The Stars, Ratings,
It’s official—after weeks of celebrities dancing, the winner has finally been crowned on Dancing with the Stars. That’s right, NFL’s all-time leading rusher took home the ugly disco ball trophy, beating favorite Mario Lopez. It’s been disputed that Lopez did a consistently better job on the show each week, with many speculating that Smith won due to his popularity. Together with his partner Cheryl Burke, the two danced their way to the top. Incidentally, Burke also won last year when paired with Drew Lachey. Said Smith of the win, “It is awesome! It is awesome! We came a long way, we really have.”
The nine discarded competitors also joined the finale to show their stuff—Joey Lawrence, Monique Coleman, Vivica A. Fox, Harry Hamlin, Sara Evans, Willa Ford, Jerry Springer, Tucker Carlson and Shanna Moakler. And so it goes, another season of the super successful celeb dance competition (who woulda thunk it?). Rumors are that the next installment of Dancing with the Stars could air as soon as March.

The Sara Evans Drama Escalates
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Dancing With The Stars,
A lot has come from Sara Evans about her divorce—her husband’s alleged cheating, verbal and emotional abuse, drinking problems and love of porn. Now, her soon to be ex-husband is saying that Evans was having an affair, and filed for divorce the day after he found out. No word on who Evans has allegedly had the affair with, and Evans’ publicist had no comment. Craig Schelske denies all of the accusations that Evans made in her petition for divorce—including having 200 nude photos of himself and sleeping with their former nanny (and Evans’ good friend). “No other photographs exist and any allegations of such are outrageous, defamatory, malicious and legally actionable,” the suit states. Schelske also says that Evans neglected their children when she started Dancing With the Stars. One thing’s for certain—this is getting uglier by the minute.

Sara Evans Leaves Dancing With the Stars
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Dancing With The Stars, News,
Us Weekly Magazine is reporting that country singer Sara Evans has quit Dancing with the Stars, effective immediately. Evans is citing personal reasons, with an Us Magazine source saying, “She is in the middle of a nasty divorce and it is too much for her to keep going.”
Us interviewed Evans on October 10th, where she said, “I feel so loved and adored by my fans, and they know how hard I am working and how much this means to me. [My husband] is amazing, he loves it. He just thinks it is amazing to watch the transition of someone who had never danced before to someone who is really enjoying dancing, so he finds it phenomenal.” Fellow contestants and Dancing With the Stars judges were suprised and saddened to hear of her departure, but support her decision to take care of her life. No further comment was made by ABC.

The Knights of Postponement
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Dancing With The Stars,
What’s worse—being postponed or put on hiatus? Hoping to prevent the latter, ABC has already decided to delay the debut of their new comedy, The Knights of Prosperity. The comedy, about a working-class group trying to rob Mick Jagger, was originally slated to start on Tuesday, Oct. 17th. ABC hopes that by rescheduling, they will be able to give it the proper promotional attention it deserves.
The sitcom, starring Donal Logue, will initially be replaced by an extended version of Dancing With the Stars. Starting Nov. 28th, the 9pm time slot will then be occupied by Big Day—a romantic comedy about the adventures leading up to a wedding. Day will star Marla Sokoloff, formerly of ABC’s The Practice. No word yet when Knights will be put back into the network’s rotation.

Shanna Moakler Punched Paris?
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Cable, Dancing With The Stars, Cable/Satellite, News,
God forbid Paris Hilton should stay out of the headlines for even one day. The latest is an accusation by Paris that Shanna Moakler punched her at a Hollywood nightclub. The incident was said to have occurred early on Wednesday, according to police and Hilton’s publicist. Moakler’s side of the story is a little different: she said that Hilton’s ex, Stavros Niarchos, hurt her by bending her wrists and pushing her down stairs—this is according to Moakler’s publicist. Anyone else exhausted about this whole situation? Both filed police reports about their individual battery attacks, with Hilton saying that Moakler “used the most vile language” then punched her in the jaw. Moakler, former MTV reality star and Dancing With the Stars reject said she and Hilton “exchanged profanities,” then Niarchos threatened to hurt her. The police are investigating the incident and will speak with witnesses at the club to get the story. Girls, if this is all over Travis Barker, you need help.

Dancing With The Stars: Springer Moves On Thanks to Tucker’s Lack of Dancing
Posted by Monica Edwards Categories: Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Dancing With The Stars, Editorial,
It was a tense nail-biter; who would leave the dance floor with their tail between their legs on the first installment of Dancing with the Stars? America voted and MSNBC’s Tucker Carlson was the first one booted from the show due to his two left feet and his lack of actual dancing. It was entertaining to watch, at best, if only to feel better about our own ability to at least bop to the beat rather than against it.
Judge Len Goodman said it best, ‘the problems started the moment Carlson stood up.’ I myself was rooting for Tucker because at least he was memorable, as well as under-dog Jerry Springer - lord knows I do not respect the man but he held his own and made me giggle at his endearing show on the dance floor. My bottom three would have been Harry Hamlin, Sara Evans, and Monique Coleman. These stars either had no personality shine through in their performances, or had too much of a “put-on” personality, (i.e. Monique Coleman.) When I decide to spend 2 hours of my precious time to watch amateur dancing, I want to be entertained and these three had the charisma of roadkill. Kind of harsh but it is nothing compared to some of the comments the judges had for a few of the stars.
I am anxious for the Latin segment of the routines, where the heat is turned up and you can really weed out the “have’s” from the “have-nots.” Mario Lopez should blow everyone away in this category as America got an eyeful of his moves this week. At the risk of sounding corny, he is one who’s Hips Don’t Lie. Vivica Fox brought some class to the group, for a 40-something woman, she has still got it. You go girl. Though I thoroughly enjoyed watching Mario Lopez shake his groove thang, I have to pick Emmitt Smith as my favorite. I found myself grinning like a Cheshire cat the whole time he was cha-cha-ing. You could see the joy in his eyes, and most of all…he had fun! That is what the show is all about.
Technically I would choose to crown Mario Lopez the winner by series end, but for showmanship and entertainment factor, definitely Emmitt Smith. Anyone who keeps me smiling for 1 whole minute and 1/2, deserves a sparkling disco ball trophy.

Dancing With the Stars’ Favorite to Win
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Dancing With The Stars, Internet,
Internet odds-makers have pegged Mario Lopez (Saved by the Bell) to be this season’s Dancing with the Stars winner. Online bookie PinnacleSports.com has Lopez favored, with his odds of winning at 3-to-1. His professional partner is Karina Smirnoff, a newcomer to the series this year. With his background as a drummer and dancer on 1980s Kids Incorporated (remember that show?), maybe he will lead the pack.
Competition is sure to be tough—when Dancing with the Stars premieres Tuesday night, look for such adept hoofers as NFL’s Emmitt Smith, Tucker Carlson from MSNBC, and talk-show host Jerry Springer. OK, they don’t exactly scream dance talent, but the other contestants are Vivica A. Fox (odds of winning are 4-to-1), Monique Coleman (of High School Musical) at 9-to-2 odds, Joey Lawrence (6-to-1 odds), and Harry Hamlin with 13-to-2 odds. Shanna Moakler, Willa Ford and Sara Evans are also participating in the dancefest. Springer is the longshot, with odds at 49-to-1.
